A new-to-PM friend asked me what to do when she disagrees with a product decision that a leader makes. Though it depends on *so* many factor, here’s how I approach this /1
Assume good intentions: Always start with an open mind, and assume they know what they are talking about. It’s easy to think the other person is an idiot. It’s much wiser to assume they are not. /2
Get the facts: I find that most of the time when people disagree, they are simply aware of different information. Have you asked this leader what makes them believe this is the right course? Do other facts show your view is right? Share your findings, ask what you are missing. /3
Any decision is often better than a perfect decision: Be thankful that the leader is actually making a decision. I’ve seen the most damage done when leaders take too long to make a call. It’s often best to commit, learn, and adjust later. Google Type-1 and Type-2 decisions. /4
Adjust quickly: Once a decision is made, and it’s legitimately wrong, the most impactful you can do is help the leader realize this as quickly as possible. Align with them on early milestones that will tell you it’s heading in the right direction. If you miss them, regroup. /5
Disagree and commit: Popularized by Amazon, it’s very important that if you make your case for why you disagree, but the “wrong” decision is still made, that you stand behind it and do your best to help it succeed. You may be proven wrong, and u won’t win with “I told you so” /6
Change team: If you have tried the above and are convinced the leader is misguided, irrational, or not open to input, it may make sense to simply move to a different team/org/company. Life is short, don’t spend too long working on things you don’t believe in. /7
What am I missing? Would love to know what others do then they disagree with a leader’s decision.
