Like most Jews, I’ve spent the last 24 hours in a state of despair.

I grew up in synagogues: my father was a rabbi and my mother directed a synagogue’s religious school. Though I’m not from Pittsburgh as I read the news I couldn’t help thinking of the synagogues I grew up in.
Beyond the tragedy of this attack, one of the things that has struck me is almost how unsurprising it feels. Even as the synagogue was always like a second home to me, it was also always a space that I knew was a potential target for people who hate Jews.
Despite the ridiculous, blame shifting comments about security, Jewish institutions already have high security. Having both parents working in synagogues meant that I grew up hearing about the new security measures synagogues were taking “just in case.”

Here's what I think of as the dear #American journalists thread 2.0. It concerns Facebook and #lka, hate speech detection, and language complexities of the Global South, where @LIRNEasia (the think tank I work at) operates.
It seems a perfectly natural reaction, given the phenomenal amount of hate speech, to urge @facebook and @twitter to get their shit together and take it off the platform. Post March 2018, we - as in Sri Lankan civil society - tried.
In fact, one of the longest running arguments @sanjanah, @NalakaG and myself have had with the @facebook India team is that they consistently fail to live up to their own damn Community Standards, and only seem to pay attention as long as the @nytimes or @WIRED is slamming them.

Like marriage, farming, food, poetry, arts & crafts, industry, commerce, architecture etc. There has been a great awakening; most nostalgia and sometimes, a relapse because one can't compete with global trends. Idolatry is on the increase pitched unto 'say' Omenala, our #culture.
African Traditional #Religion (ATR) especially as practiced by ndi Igbo was just a tip of the iceberg about their culture. It was the culture of a typical Igbo person not to go hungry, as such manliness, was measured by the number of yam tubers one had in his barn and other #farm

Sometimes sex work Twitter disappoints me.

Usually it's abolitionists spouting their nonsense. But sometimes - rarely - it's other sex workers who don't get it.

So here's a short thread about women who see sex workers and why they do it. 1/
I'm a straight male sex worker for women. I work full time at this job and see clients who range in age from 20 to 80. Some are disabled, some are single, some are married, some have never had sex, some are very experienced. 2/
I believe it's fair to say that having done this job for 10 years, I have a good understanding of why women do - and don't - see sex workers. 3/

Library classification systems are racist af. But in the 70s, Brian Deer, from Kahnawake, created a system for the National Indian Brotherhood that’s still in use today. Here’s why this is HUGE:
There were certainly Indigenous librarians working prior to Brian Deer, like Charles A. Cooke, who proposed “Indian National Library” that Duncan Campbell Scott rejected (see the book Paper Talk for more)
But Brian Deer, in organizing records for the National Indian Brotherhood, realized that most ways of organizing information were inappropriate for an Indigenous collection. Instead of trying to make his records fit a white dude’s idea of the universe, he made his own.

The closures that @Rachael_Swindon highlights should also been seen in the context of government policy. She is completely right that this is how the Tories are reducing #socialmobility but it is also how they are reducing access to other vital services for the most vulnerable.
It has long been government policy (in common with other countries) that people should access government services online. Other countries recognise that there is a need to keep other options open to protect the most vulnerable. The UK government took a different approach.
The UK government decided to tell people who had difficulty accessing #digital services that they should go to the #library where staff would help them. They then gave no funding for the training of library staff or for their time or for the equipment needed.
