This is bad. Like, lots of bad. Canadian forests have gone from absorbing ~100 million metric tons of CO2/year (MMT/y) to releasing 100-200 MMT/y. A net swing of 200-300 MMT/y is equivalent to ~12-18% of US electricity sector CO2 emissions. Not clear how we'd ever reverse this...
For perspective, all of New England's electricity generation emitted 35 million metric tons in 2017, according to @isonewengland.

So this is like 5-8.5x New England's electricity emissions.

Like I said: lots of bad.

The bill is notable and important contribution to efforts to build national consensus for serious clean energy and climate policy action. Here's why I like it...
1. There's broad consensus electricity is the linchpin in any effort to confront #climatechange, not only because it's responsible for ~30% of US CO2, but also because electrifying more energy use in transportation, buildings, & industry is key to decarbonize those sectors too.

There's a new working paper from econonomists @UChiEnergy circulating today that claims Renewable Portfolio Standards implemented in 29 states raise electricity rates and are a very costly way to cut CO2. I have some serious questions/concerns about the paper. A thread...

She asked me to comment & sent the paper which I was able to read over the weekend. I shared some concerns.
I am -- and encourage others to be -- very hesitant to treat this study as the definitive word on the cost of RPS policies. In particular, I urge any policy makers or stakeholders in policy debates to treat these findings WITH CAUTION at this stage.

I went back to dig up my old analysis on this from June 2018 after Alvarez et al. study in Science on upstream methane emissions in US oil & gas sector . Looks like I never shared it (I was in middle of finishing my dissertation at time), so here goes...
First on method: I estimate GHG benefits of U.S. coal to natural gas shift in electricity sector, including 1) direct emissions from coal & natural gas generators, 2) upstream coal mine methane emissions and 3) upstream natural gas methane emissions at different leak rates.
I calculate the net effect on CO2-equivalent emissions using the 100 year global warming potential impact and 20 year global warming potential (GWP). Please note all relevant caveats that apply to using GWP (see )

So @DJSnM mentioned the SpaceX Dragon 2 capsule being docked on the "front" of the International Space Station and that made me think about something I've always vaguely wondered and never really put into words:
Is there a "front" to the ISS, with regards to how it orbits?
And it turns out the answer is: Yes!
Other than occasional rotations to help with docking (or re-boosting), it maintains a consistent orientation relative to the direction it orbits in.
So in the above picture, it's always orbiting with the part on the top of the picture as forward.

This will be a thread on Antarctica, some of the current news(!!), history, & fun facts. Lets go exploring!
First, I want to call attention to the fact there's currently a person in Antarctica attempting to do something that no human in history has done before. It's a bit scary but very exciting. We'll come back to that soon though! 😉
A little about the landmass itself. Antarctica is larger then the continental US, it's more like US+Mexico combined. The closest point point to it on another continent is the tip of South America, about 1,000km(621mi) away. Temperatures can range from -90C(130F) to 17.5C (63.5F)!

1. Everybody knows President Donald Trump is bad for the climate. He said global warming was a hoax. He pulled the U.S. out of the U.N. climate agreement. Now he’s seeking to subsidize coal plants.

But what if what everyone thinks is wrong?
2. What if Trump’s policy bailing out coal and nuclear plants actually results in fewer emissions than letting them close and be replaced by natural gas?

As strange as that might sound, that’s what a new Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) report suggests.
3. Why? Because under Trump’s action, “coal-fired plants may not actually run more,” Bloomberg says.

By contrast, BNEF said, the continued operation of nuclear plants “could displace millions of tons of carbon dioxide a year.”
