By any objective measure SCOTUS should strike down census citizenship question, as 3 courts already done. But good chance that John Roberts, who wrote opinion gutting Voting Rights Act, will allow Trump to rig American politics for next decade motherjones.com/politics/2019/…
Trump admin officials laughably claim citizenship question will help enforce Voting Rights Act when all the evidence shows the opposite, just like they said travel ban wasn't a Muslim ban when Trump said exactly that motherjones.com/politics/2019/…

DeSantis won by 30k votes when 1.7 MILLION Floridians couldn’t vote because of racist felon disenfranchisement law. Now he’s signing measure to keep 1000s of Floridians from voting in 2020 & blatantly undermining will of the voters who overwhelmingly supported Amendment 4

Breaking: SCOTUS just ruled that extreme partisan gerrymandering is beyond reach of federal courts. 5-4 decision by Roberts. This is very bad for democracy
This is an absolutely insane opinion by Roberts, saying that no matter how extreme partisan gerrymandering is, courts can't strike them down. Will give a green light to even more extreme gerrymandering in next round of redistricting after 2020

I have a sneaking feeling that Roberts and conservative Court majority sides with the government on the census case but Robert(& Kav?) sides w liberals to strike partisan gerrymandering in tiny fraction of cases as egregious as North Carolina to try to preserve #SCOTUS legitimacy

#SCOTUS's 5-4 ruling in Bucklew, rejecting a prisoner's claim that his execution by lethal injection will violate the Eighth Amendment because of the pain it will inflict on him (due to his medical condition), may, in retrospect, be the true beginning of the "post-Kennedy" Court.
It's not the first 5-4 ruling in a merits case in which the new conservative majority prevailed (that came in the immigration detention case, Nielsen v. Preap).

Nor am I confident that Justice Kennedy would've voted differently here, given his previous votes in Glossip and Baze.
But there are three features of Justice Gorsuch's majority opinion that I doubt Justice Kennedy would have endorsed:

First, the majority's refusal to note (let alone distinguish) the Court's "evolving standards of decency" approach to identifying "cruel and unusual punishment."

☹️Worried about fair voting access? Justified. The #SCOTUS conservative majority has consistently upheld state laws that brazenly suppress voting. Last year, they allowed OH to purge voters from the rolls and in the process protected similar laws in 6 states. BUT THERE IS HOPE!
🙂With different leadership in state legislatures, proposals that restrict voting access would be DOA. & with new majorities in purple or even red states, those same legislative chambers can protect voting! That's already happened in blue-majority states WA & OR. #whystatesmatter
