Now that the school resource officer who allegedly failed to act during the Stoneman Douglas High massacre has been arrested, let's revisit how the aftermath of Parkland differed from the aftermath of the Santa Fe High shooting, which left 10 dead & 13 injured in Texas. A thread:
In Parkland, the Broward Co Sheriff was suspended over his handling of the case; 2 campus monitors at the school were fired. 4 more school employees were reassigned; 2 deputies resigned after their actions were scrutinized; one was suspended; a 4th was put on restrictive duty.
Officials released a timeline of the shooting the next day. Less than 10 days later, we had records showing that people called to report the alleged shooter’s conduct, and other docs showing why it took more than 11 min for officers to enter the freshman classroom building
Florida's Legislature impaneled a commission, which compiled a 439-page report less than a year after the shooting that highlighted systemic failures and created a list of specific recommendations stemming from missteps.

None of that happened after the Santa Fe High shooting.
We still don’t have an exact timeline. We don’t know why it took about 30 minutes for law enforcement officers to arrest the alleged shooter in Texas. We don’t know what officers, school safety officials or administrators did or didn’t do that may have made a difference that day
Some of victims’ families still don’t know exactly how their loved ones died at Santa Fe High School.
The state never created a third-party group to investigate the massacre. One state lawmaker told me: “I really don't see what we're going to get extra out of the particular Santa Fe case."
When I asked Rachel Blundell, SFHS’s principal, about who held the school or district accountable, she said: “There’s no need for an accountability system; we’re our own accountability system because we love this community, we love the kids who go here and our children go here.”
Some of the families’ of victims and survivors don’t agree. Scot Rice, whose wife Flo was shot through the legs and survived, said:
"We're not doing a 'whodunit.' We want to know what the failures were that led up to this, and then what did the school do to fix the problem?"
It's easy to forget about Santa Fe when no information about it has been released. But it's important to remember that these families are still suffering, and we don't even know if anyone from the school or law enforcement should be held accountable.
