To no one's surprise, the reality behind this all-too-convenient "Lincoln was on MY side" quote is a bit more complicated. Let's take a look, shall we?
2/ The quote D'Souza extracts here is a favorite of Right-wingers today, because it seems to let them claim Lincoln ("the chief and real purpose...is eminently conservative") as their progenitor and mascot; hell, there's even a Founders reference! YAY.
3/ D'Souza and his ilk love this quote because it gets them some Lincoln street cred without having to acknowledge race or slavery. But the devil, as they say, is in the details. What's the context for this quote? SO GLAD YOU ASKED...

Is it just me, or are the articles in this particular genre always authored by humanities folks? Which begs the question: if the humanities are dying, does it make sense to reject our most powerful tool for engaging larger publics? (1/)

2/ I'm not going to pretend there aren't problems with social media and the ways in which some people engage in those spaces. But I would be careful about assuming the status quo-including "impact" journals, good old boy networks, and conferences-is the hill we want to die on.
3/ This article's critique of social media and its metric-driven, SEO-type culture, where profiles and clicks after the coin of the realm, implicitly assumes the way we have scholarly conversations off social media is free of those motivations & inequities. That's just not so.

My military friends tell me that a soldier's need for rest and hydration are scientifically understood. They are mandated for soldiers in combat with the same force as a command to attack. One can see exhaustion and dehydration by looking.
We transport our troops, mostly, we don't march to battle anymore for exactly the same reason. It's not because we have trucks and transports, we don't have to use them. If marching to battle won more victories, we'd still do it. It doesn't because it spends your men's energy.

Apparently it's both EDS-Awareness Month and also Mental Health Awareness Month so here's a thing: Your brain and body are one and the same. Your "mind" isn't a thing. You brain is an organ just like your stomach or your spleen. Emotions are physical sensations and material
There is a dialectical relationship between the mind and body, in the same way that there's a connection between your kidney failing and your bladder hurting. There can be "body/physical-only" causes for emotional distress and mental unwellness, and vice versa
Often times, people feel anxious or sad or something and assume a "mind-level" thing must be the cause. You might feel anxious because it's cold in the room, but then you project it onto work or relationships

For anyone who like strategy games and has never played Hearts of Iron 4 #HOI4 before here's a wee story, the game starts in 1936 or 1939 and runs through the WW2 era to around 1950. You can play with nations set to follow historical focuses or alternate hsitory.. /1
I started a new alt history game as South Africa, my aim was to leave the British Empire and create an egalitarian South Africa by the 1940's and survive the war intact. Here's state of play.. its now 1972 the tech tree was done 20 years ago but I cant stop playing.. /2 #hoi4
The game started as normal, with Axis powers becoming increasingly belligerent in the late 30's, the Anchsluss and then the invasion and defeat of Czechoslovakia, then the alt history kicked in, a facist civil war happened in Britain and Mosely won.. /3 #hoi4

The word magic carries a lot of stereotypes with it, it could honestly just be called...I don’t know, life? lol
Everybody performs magic whether they know it or not. That’s why it’s so funny when people say magic is of the devil because they themselves are preforming magic on a continuous bases without even knowing. 😂 & ritualistic magic at that, in churches & weddings.

1. As I said yesterday, we got Trump the same way I got Obama the same way we got Bush the same way we got Clinton: We allowed our civil society, our shared sense of civic responsibility, and our view of government as just the thing that governs rot out from beneath us.
2. You have an affirmative duty to the species to have lots of babies. You may not be able to fulfill that duty, you may discharge it in a few ways, but the duty exists because otherwise the species withers and dies and we are the only species created imago Dei.
