Thinking of Jack Foley, my daughter Marianne's maternal great grandfather, while dropping her off at nursery. He was at Juno beach with the Canadians 75 years ago today, with 93rd LAA Rgt. His triple Oerlikon gun mounted on a Crusader tank saw action
An Irishman and professional soldier in British Army, Jack was in action throughout the war (with 1st Loyals). Fought and evacuated from Dunkirk in a fishing boat. Fought in North Africa, Tobruk and El Alamein
He fought cross Europe and Rhine. In April 1945, he volunteered to help out in Bergen-Belsen after the death camp was liberated. The babe in arms if Kate Foley, later Smith, my wife Emily's mother
As I dropped off Marianne this morning, I was thinking what a miracle it was that he survived Dunkirk, North Africa and then D-Day for Kate, followed by Emily then our daughter to be born. He died in 1993
He landed on the 'Nan' sector (Bernières-sur-Mer) of Juno beach, as part of E troop of 93rd LAA (321 Battery) which in turn was assigned to 80th AA Brigade. E troop landed at 17:00 on D Day and was ready/in action at the beach exit by 18:30
