Usw.

Federal Government - Universal Pharmacare - #PEI signs on to agreement:

the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Canada's Minister of Health, and the Honourable Ernie Hudson, Minister of Health and Wellness for the Government of Prince Edward island, announced the signing of the first /1
agreement to accelerate the implementation of national universal pharmacare. Through this agreement, the province will receive $35 million over four years in federal funding, to add new drugs to its list of covered drugs, and lower out of pocket costs for drugs covered /2
under existing public plans for Island residents.

While Prince Edward Island currently operates more than 25 different public drug plans, the list of drugs covered under these plans is less comprehensive than those in other Atlantic provinces, and the rest of Canada. /3

#CDC #VAERS US data (June) versus German #PEI (July).

I start with the result graph. For details and source see below. Conclusion: the US and German data are very comparable. Image
2/ Sources.

CDC USA report: June 23, 2021, Tom Shimabukuro

Paul Ehrlich (PEI) Germany report, July 15, 2021
3/ Data preparation:

1) The CDC report is very well done and properly normalized. No further calculations are needed. All is done and ready.

2) The German report is poor. No normalization by doses, nor by sex. In General the report is of a very low quality.

Klaus Stöhr: "Es wird keine #Herdenimmunität geben!"

Weil aber u.a.

#PEI 2021-22 budget comes with a $112M deficit — but has a built-in, $50M COVID contingency fund.

Deficit for current fiscal year — initially pegged at $172M — now expected to be $120M, in part because province didn’t spend all 2020-21 COVID contingency funding. #peipoli
This is a spending budget, with at least two more years of deficit spending in the long-term plan. That plan for #PEI only extends to 2023-24, when the province is projecting a $28M deficit. Govt calls it a plan to "get back to a more balanced budget." #peipoli

Today we start to see some form take shape around the shadows of ideas put forward 2 weeks ago in the #PEI throne speech. Honestly I thought from the start there were a lot of interesting mentions there, which may or may not turn into the policies / programs they suggest.
In health care, more details around the province's move to collaborative health care, perhaps where these 3 'medical neighbourhoods' will be located (where the patients on the registry are). Details around the seniors health strategy & new programs to facilitate aging in place...
We've learned since throne speech day the commitment to add 300 childcare spaces this year is just govt fulfilling its 2-year-old promise on pre-k, which, well I think there's a case to be made to go beyond that. Maybe we'll learn what govt means by a "fixed rate" for ECE centres

Some reflections on the past year under COVID from the premier to get us started @peileg today.

We've got the operating budget coming tomorrow, then the house breaks for our first "legislative planning week." #peipoli
Bevan-Baker starts off QP asking the premier what he'll do to "reign in" minister who provide false statements in the house. I think both his examples are Myers. Including the time he told the house the process for special warrants is to spend the money, then apply (it's not).
And over to said minister, with a question stemming from debate around a Green bill yesterday. Bevan-Baker asks Myers what role small modular nuclear reactors will play in getting #PEI to net zero? We don't know, answers the minister. We'll be having convos with NB.

1/x The point of a carbon tax is to make it costlier to burn fossil fuels, thus by comparison making actions that harm the environment less (biking, taking the bus, working from home etc) more cost-competitive...
2/x When former premier Wade MacLauchlan came back from the Paris climate summit in the first year of his mandate, he was gung-ho about the "war effort" required to combat climate change, talk of tightening belts etc.
3/x But when it came time for #PEI to adopt a carbon price (which the province refused to do until forced by the feds literally on the last possible day), the tone changed dramatically. Govt was at that point insistent that tax paid by #PEI drivers would be returned to them.

Set for a new week here @peileg. This is day 7 of the sitting, and after this week the house will break for March break. A break week is a (dare I say exciting?) new development here at the #PEI legislature. Of course in prior years the house wouldn't be sitting this time of year
Anyway, the new legislative calendar includes a break week every 4th sitting week.…
.@nicolammacleod is joining the small but mighty @CBCPEI leg team today. She wrote this story, based on debate we heard last Friday in the house:…

Meanwhile in #France,
"the peak of this second wave is over"

(according to the President in his Adress to the Nation):
Wait... "the peak is over" doesn´t mean "it´s back to normal"!

Confinement will only fall on December 15,
if there´s less than 5.000 new cases a day.
(today it´s ~9.000).

France is disappointed.🙁

Although they certainly can make it happen.
Meanwhile in #Switzerland:
(excess mortality of the second wave is significant)

Good news: fastest decrease in infections happens in the worst hit areas now.

For each #Province and #Territory in #Canada, here is the help that was offered to those living with #disabilities. This will include the #Federal help offered as well as any hoops #PWDs may have needed to jump through to get it and whether CERB was clawed back or not.
This is based on my own research, and if anyone sees anything I missed or may have gotten wrong please let me know.
Let's start with #Yukon
According to several articles, eligible families on #disability supports we're to get up to $400 to help with costs until August. Unknown what eligibility was.
#CERB was exempt from clawbacks.

#COVID19 #Canada reported case trends:

MB: 📈
AB: ➖
SK: ➖
ON: 📉
QC: 📉

Atlantic Canada is quiet (except for 5 cases in PEI among foreign essential workers). Image
The foreign essential workers are said to have limited contact with others. Their industry is not named (except that it is not healthcare) but given clues is likely agriculture.…
#PEI has thus far avoided detectable community transmission and hospitalization for #COVID19.

As #COVID19 cases are found to spread, #Melbourne (city of ~5 million) tries to contain them by going into #Lockdown.
(The interview features the idea of a dedicated #Quarantine building - that would actually help, I guess)...
"People acting as if the pandemic was over was 'not the answer, it is part of the problem' ".

"The virus had leaked from postcodes already under the stay-at-home orders to other parts of #Melbourne."
(and beyond, it is feared).
Due to #Melbourne's outbreak, neighbouring South Australia is about to completely close it's borders to #Victoria.

(Nearly) no exceptions. And those essential few who are allowed in, will have to wear facemasks the entire time...

Vorpommern-Greifswald district (where rejections of #Gütersloh residents took place, yesterday)
has specific rules:
"Those who return from international risk areas (out of Germany) or whose Corona-Warning App has alerted them, need to report to authorites" Image
In fact, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Corona-ordinance really prohibits entry of people from international risk areas AND german risk areas as well.
It's just not prominently featured on their websites.

(Overlooked that myself, hence deleted earlier tweet)… Image
People from #Gütersloh district may have to scrap all their holiday plans anyway...

An official #Lockdown is just being announced for the entire district.
(for one week, as of now)

May 7 #COVID19 #Canada update. Explore the data on our (@ishaberry2) dashboard below.👇 ImageImage
We're now tracking active cases (cumulative cases - cumulative recovered - cumulative mortality), which appear on the summary at the top of the dashboard, as well as the overview table at the bottom. We also have a new dataset for this on our GitHub page.
There's some good news here: active cases in #Alberta have been consistently declining over the past week. Same story in a few other provinces, most notably #NovaScotia. #PEI has a single active reported case at the moment.

PEI's Chief Medical Officer of Health says 183 tests have been done on Islanders -
They're waiting for some results, should get them later today.
Still one confirmed.

@CTVAtlantic #PEI
"Testing capacity we have on Prince Edward Island will be changing..."

She says they will be able to do their own testing soon -- right now they're waiting for results on almost 100 tests from Winnipeg.

PEI non-essential businesses, like salons, gyms, malls, pools, are being asked to close immediately.

The Island's 17 liquor and cannabis locations will close tomorrow at 2pm.

He says there had been a Green boost since the provincial election, but is confident Casey has this riding. Casey originally elected in 2011. #cdnpoli #elxn43 Image
Greens are strong in most Island ridings this election. Charlottetown has been Liberal since 1988. #cdnpoli #elxn43

For those who don't know -
PEI elected a Green Official Opposition into its provincial legislature in the spring -
I spoke with Charlottetown's green candidate earlier who says she's felt some of that momentum and support this campaign.

One of the longest, currently serving MP's in the country - Liberal Lawrence MacAulay - is asking for re-election. The MP for Cardigan was first elected in 1988.

If he's successful, tonight will mark his tenth consecutive election win. #elxn43 Image

We often tout #NovaScotia's amazing #geology but all four #Atlantic provinces have great geological sights - partly because we were all connected in supercontinent #Pangea 200-300 million years ago! We're going to talk about some spots in #NL, #NB and #PEI this weekend.
#nspoli Image
This is #AtlanticCanada 10,000 years ago. #PEI was still connected to the mainland - no #ConfederationBridge needed! Sea levels are lower during ice ages because so much water is frozen. It wasn't until 5000 years ago that rising sea levels made PEI an island.

#Newfoundland's #BellIsland had iron mines from 1895-1966. The #NovaScotia Steel and Coal Co. helped open the first one. The iron was made into steel in #Sydney, #CapeBreton. Steel is iron and carbon (which is derived from coal) so #CB coal and #NL iron were a good match!

THREAD: There’s another huge anoxic event happening in Wheatley River Estuary right now. This is one of the PEI estuaries most impacted by agriculture. How does this happen?
When an estuary is highly impacted by nutrients, we get algae blooms. Big mats of sea lettuce form and float to the surface. They block out all of the light and prevent plants like seagrass from photosynthesizing. Without photosynthesis, oxygen levels plummet.
Soon the sea lettuce grows so thick it starts to shade itself and decompose. The bacteria breaking it down also use oxygen. Oxygen levels plummet further.
