Today, as Scott Warren's misdemeanor trial for leaving water for people in the desert on #CabezaPrieta, the refuge ironically posts this about the importance of drinking water in the desert - for pronghorns:
which they must resupply with water driven through the wilderness area on trucks. Today @USFWS regional director Juliette Fernandez testified that they put blue flags on animal water tanks, but this water is not safe for humans to drink.
Judge Collins asks, "water in blue flag tanks isn't potable - How do you make sure people know it isn't safe to drink?"

Fernandez from @USFWS answered: "Yeah, I'm not sure."

While it's rare for Mercy Corps to comment on U.S. domestic politics, our experience working with children who have lived through trauma leaves us deeply troubled by reports of conditions for migrant children at the border.
It is imperative that providers responsible for the care of detained young migrants provide access to high-quality mental health and psychosocial support services, in addition to following basic principles of decency in how migrants are treated.
These children are likely to have experienced toxic stress for extended periods of time—the staff who are in contact with them must be trained accordingly. Otherwise, these toxic psychological events may affect them for life.

Today I will vote in favor of the resolution to terminate the President’s declaration of a national emergency. No such emergency exists on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The President is using this declaration as a false pretense to divert taxpayer money, primarily away from the Department of Defense, toward the construction of a wasteful, ineffective wall along the southern border.
This declaration is an unacceptable abuse of power that circumvents the constitutional authority of Congress.

One of the major migrant family prison camps is in Berks County, PA. This camp was one of three locations used by ICE's effort, begun in the prior administration, "to set an example and prevent a recurrence of the 2014 border crisis" (language from WAPost) goo.gl/Rbkm51
The kidnappings policy=a prison abolition issue. Fake justifications for child "separation" relate to the longstanding (@queermigrations has good work on the history) practice of imprisoning migrants, refugees, & asylum seekers. Imprisoning families *together* is *also* horrific.

Competence is knowing what to do in a situation and how to do it. It is not the same as excellence.
Excellence is dependent on other people, like judges, examiners, teachers, assessors, inspectors, auditors. But we can't control these people and whether they think we're excellent or not.
