Let's talk about job interviews, since apparently "don't ask people to recite CS trivia" is apparently controversial.
You want to learn three things when you're interviewing someone.
Can they do the job?
Will they do the job?
Are they a complete asshole?
Can they do the job? Ask them questions that expose the capability you're trying to hire for. It's likely not "can memorize algorithmic trivia."
Will they do the job? You want them happy in a role. If they light up at the idea of solving trivia questions, great--but that had best be what the job entails or I've got some bad news for you.
Are they an asshole? Well, I don't know; did they ask you to recite CS trivia during the interview?
Ask open ended questions. Ask people what they're passionate about and let them go on that topic. Look for strengths, not absence of weakness.
And you forget at your own peril that interviews are two-way streets. Act accordingly.
