I know the boots should be brown. However, the photo was taken at night so the brightness/exposure was a bit funny/weird in some areas.
And I always prefer not to adjust it too much if this implies making that specific area look weird/fake.
If you take a picture of yourself in a florest, surrounded by green leaves, grass, etc, it is very likely that your skin will look green (or it will have some green spots = reflections of the environment). This is how light and color interact and work in the real world.
I always try to capture that in my work.
In nature, every object has a color that is a combination of several different colors reflected on each other. And depending on the environment, weather conditions, light/darkness, the “base” color will change.
Colorization is a combination of historical research (first and foremost in my case) and artistic license. In this case, the dark boots were not an artistic choice. They show that I have to work with what I have = a photo with dark areas that can’t be corrected digitally.
Anyway, thought this would be a good opportunity to explain a bit of my thought process when colorizing an image. :)
Example: there’s no such a thing as a blue horse. But now, take a moment to look at this picture and you’ll see exactly what I mean. :)
But of course, I will make mistakes sometimes! And I'm more than happy to receive your feedback when that happens.
