Out of all the unsuccessful R21 apps, what % of them do you revise/resubmit? #NIHgrants
Follow up question, for those who flipped what were the deciding factor
It’s well known that ESIs are in a disadvantage for getting R21s. Here are the stats nexus.od.nih.gov/all/2016/11/04…
“approximately 35% of R01 applications, and 50% of R21 applications, are submitted by new investigators. In case of awards, 35% of R01 awards and 34% of R21 awards are made to new investigators.”

.@jeremymberg did some analysis back in 2014 showing a diverging mismatch btwn the no. of apps vs award. That was 5 yrs ago! Would be nice to see more updated data. Maybe this has gotten better (or worse)?

The GPe is important for motor control but its precise involvement is unclear. A major challenge has been the identification of neuron subtypes. Our lab along with others such as @ArynGittis and @kaabrahao @_pauldodson @blsabatini have been working hard on the topic. 1/n
Based on the earlier work from @MarinLab and others, we’ve made a Npas1 BAC mouse and two novel abs for Npas1. Importantly, we found that PV+ neurons and Npas1+ neurons are two near-exclusive (~2% overlap) neuron classes. 2/n
However, there are up to 20% of the GPe neurons that we have not been molecularly defined. Others labs arrived at different classification schemes. That itself is a whole other thread, for a different day. OTOH there are a few outstanding questions. 3/n

2/ Demographics

Two-thirds of the respondents were doctors (41% internal medicine, 18% hospital medicine), with at least 10 other roles represented.

Nearly 80% were between 20 and 40 years old.
3/ Geography

56% of respondents were from the United States, with at least one response coming from an additional 57 other countries.

The global reach of Twitter is pretty awesome.

Today's @JITMH17 press conference underway, where they'll name four MH17 suspects who will be charged next year (Girkin, Dubinsky, Pulatov, Kharchenko).
@JITMH17 Press conference starts out by introducing delegates of the five countries of the JIT. Starts with Malaysia -- ignore their insane 9/11 truther PM, they're still involved in the investigation.
@JITMH17 Westerbeke dispels alternate theories (some of which are 'deliberate untruths') around MH17, without naming Russia directly as the source. He reiterates that the downing happened from a Buk missile launched from south of Snizhne.

1) Unrelated to the scantalators discussion. But perhaps something to note.

Fans often think that mangakas are making a lot of money. That really depends. There's a huge disparity between mangakas who "make it" and those who don't.
2)
 There are two main ways mangakas make money.

First is the "per page" system where they get X per page. Even these are usually just hitting $100 per for the not as famous mangakas.

Now, if your series is a weekly (Like Jump) maybe you can make "$ x 20ish pages x 4" in a month
3) But if your manga is not a weekly series and it's a monthly release of 40 pages or something, then your ability to make money from the per page system is automatically lower.

The other main source of income is the royalty from the sales of Tankoubon.

1) Why you should use non-gendered language about a baby you don’t know, and an easy way to do so: a thread.

First of all, you have a 50/50 chance of guessing wrong when you see a stranger’s baby and say “he’s so cute!” or “how old is she?”...
2) And it’s awkward for a parent to have to say “oh, she’s a girl” or “he’s a boy, actually.” The parent may be offended, or they may not be, but usually then the person who asked the misgendering question acts like they’ve said something really offensive...
3) and they apologize profusely and then the parent has to say no, no, it’s actually ok. Y’all, that is such a waste of time and brainpower. Especially when you have to constantly have the conversation - which can be for any number of reasons...

#TodayInHistory The Indian Army captures the town of Dograi, comming within striking range of Lahore, during the 1965 War, and had it not been for an impending ceasefire, would have captured the city too. This however was a follow up to the Battle of Burki.
While the Battle of Asal Uttar is well known during the 1965 War, another equally significant one is the Battle of Burki. where the Indian Army advance very close to Lahore, almost to the verge of capturing it. It was once again a decisive victory.
Burki is a small village, quite close to Lahore, connected to it by the Ichogil canal. This canal was actually built by residents of the city, to protect themselves from future Indian aggressions, and goes all the way up to the Sutlej river. Also called the BRB Canal.
