1/ Artificial intelligence is changing everything from how we are selected for jobs to whether or not we are given bank loans.

It’s exciting—and worrisome. That’s because the people building A.I. systems don’t reflect the diversity of the people they will likely represent
2/ Take Google, for instance. The company lists 893 people working on machine learning.

Only one is a black woman. read.medium.com/hDKr9MN
3/ Facebook lists 146 people on its A.I. Research Team.

Not one is black.

4/ To understand why this matters, we first must understand how A.I. works:

A.I. is driven by algorithms. Researchers train those algorithms using a process called machine learning, which identifies patterns in large amounts of data, and is used to predict future behavior.
5/ These predictions are then converted into statistical models, which are then used to make decisions about our everyday lives.
6/ There is an assumption that, because it deals strictly with data, algorithmic decision making is unbiased. That’s false. read.medium.com/hDKr9MN
7/ Consider this scenario: a police force uses historical stop data to create a statistical model to identify “crime hot spots.” Inside that data, however, includes stops made through practices like stop and frisk, in which 90% of the men of color targeted were innocent.
8/ In that case, the dataset is not a record of crime, but simply a record of police stopping innocent black and brown men—a record used to further dispatch police into these communities. read.medium.com/hDKr9MN
9/ That’s discrimination, and it’s being baked into one of the most important technological developments of the century. What’s worse, the legal system isn’t prepared to handle it.

But there is a way out. Read more on @zoramag. read.medium.com/hDKr9MN
