Sr admin official tells me that the Mexican government has committed to gradually deploy 5400 National Guardsmen to take operational control of the Mexico/Guatemala border, theoretically helping to end the caravans that go through Mexico to the US....
2/ Big q of course is whether Mexican government upholds promises to which it agreed, official said. This also pertains to pledged expansion of Migrant Protection Protocols — will Mexican government follow through?
3/ Official says ultimate number of Mexican National Guard troops could go up to 6k and the commitment is to have them deployed within 4-6 weeks.... but...
4/ ...BUT a former senior administration official says that the Mexicans had previously agreed to do both increased Mexican National Guard troops and larger MPP numbers, the new deal seems more an agreement to do it faster.
5/ The former official says expanding MPP “was taking longer than we wanted, but that was because of resource constraints on both sides of the border.“
6/ As for deploying the Mexican National Guard, the former official says months ago the Mexican government presented a plan to deploy thousands of their national guard to their southern border; “they said it would take until about June to really get going.”
7/ Former official says that at the time the Trump administration told the Mexicans that was too slow, but now it’s June and the Mexican government is agreeing to — essentially — follow through on the timeline they’d previously proposed, under pressure.

9/ (The promise re Mexican National Guard troops to Mexico’s southern border was made in March when it was clear their new national guard legislation was going to happen. March meeting was scheduled by US to pressure Mexicans to speed up promises made in December.)
