Any Journalist in Nigeria who covers Politics has many stories to tell especially during the military and post-military eras and now. He hears, knows a lot. I had more when I lived inside Aso Rock in 1999-2001. I go sit with Military officers playing Tompola at the Mess at night
Senior Military officers can be loud and lousy. They can talk carelessly especially under the influence of some shots of Cognac while playing the game. You get to hear stories of how Politicians would go see Abacha at night, get briefings of what to tell the Press the next day
The next day, you hear a Politician addressing the press, praising IBB, Abacha, etc, declaring June 12 inconclusive and warning international communities to stay clear. You can never find a military man doing those dirty jobs. The Politicians did dirty jobs to keep the soldiers!
That was how Yomi Tokoya, Jerry Ghana, Ojo Maduekwe, Ebenezer Babatope, Arisekola Alao, Daniel Kanu, Emmanuel Okereke, and many others emerged. They were all military apologists who made money visiting dictators at night. I was at the Abacha 2million man March
The 2million Man March was organized by Daniel Kanu, using Youths Earnestly Ask For Abacha, YEAA, and NACYAN. At that event paid through funds allaegely released by Al-Mustapha, A list musicians were there. They played and praised Abacha to high heaven. They were adequately paid!
King Sunny Ade collected N1million, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu collected N1million, Queen Salawa Abeni N500, 000, Wasiu Ayinde, Pasuma N400, 000, Daddy Showkey N250, 000, Feladey N300, 000, Stella Monye N300, 000, Zaki Adzee N250, 000.
Other musicians who performed were Orits Wiliki, Dan Maraya Jos, Mamman Shata, Felix Liberty, Mike Okri, Victor Uwaifo, Evi Edna Ogoli and Ras Kimono. Comedians like the New Masqurades, Zebrudaya, Papi Luwe and several others were all there for Abacha
The story of the rot in Nigeria political space cannot be told one day. But let it be on record that those who aided the military to kill democracy are still around. They are still inflicting Nigeria with deep wounds. It is Friday guys. Make I no spoil am. Next time we continue!
