Brilliant piece by @AdamSerwer on conservative illiberalism. "The American creed has no more devoted adherents than those who have been historically denied its promises, and no more fair-weather friends than those who have taken them for granted."

@AdamSerwer The whole thing is great, but this is the paragraph that hit me hardest.
@AdamSerwer It reminded me of this paragraph by @adam_tooze which quickly sketched the history of GOP illiberalism that stretches back to the 1950s.
@AdamSerwer @adam_tooze The term "illiberalism" helps us see Trumpism as part of a contemporary, global movement of right wing nationalist populists, but also helps us see the deep American roots of Trumpism. It's not a foreign import.
@AdamSerwer @adam_tooze An earlier thread where I tie Trump's rhetoric (and the domestic terrorism it has helped whip up) to the 150+ year history of racial illiberalism in American politics.
@AdamSerwer @adam_tooze This NYRB piece by @mtomasky also identified the extent to which the GOP has become the institutional embodiment of illiberalism, a dangerous thing in a nation supposedly devoted to constitutional liberalism.
