So two very clearly fake videos this week and many, many people are falling for them. It will be funny until it's more serious, and we have a war or the end of democracy or something.
The first was the Korean park ride that had been digitally altered to make it look far more extreme than it actually is. The second is a parody of a Boston Dynamics robot. If it looks too good to be true...
And people will say: sure I thought it was real, what's the harm? And yes that's mostly true. But other people are watching to see how easily the fakery spreads, and these lessons *will* be applied for more nefarious purposes. Are we ready?
One good early example of this was the "Golden Eagle Snatches Kid" video, which went viral in 2012. We debunked it for our clients @storyful back then. It's another "if it feels too good to be true... " videos.
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
