Heads up: Black women prosecutors elected in response to the demand for progressive prosecutors are facing ugly attacks that are unprecedented and alarming.

Some people heard that there was "bipartisan support" for criminal justice reform and mistakenly believed that there would not be pitched battle to hold on to the status quo. But the push back against progressive prosecutors has been fierce - especially against Black women.
Electing progressive prosecutors comes with the obligation to stay engaged and to monitor and stand against attempts to undermine the effectiveness of those officials you elected precisely to challenge racism & unfairness in the criminal justice system. Keep your eye on this.

An honor to spend time yesterday w/Albert Woodfox in our D.C. office. Mr. Woodfox spent over 40 yrs in solitary confinement at Angola prison for a crime he did not commit. ⁦@NAACP_LDF⁩ Litigation Dir ⁦@SamSpital⁩ was on the team of attys that secured his 2016 release.
Mr. Woodfox’s memoir tells his story.The only purpose of solitary confinement he says is “to break the human spirit.”The discipline & commitment to human dignity he learned as a member of the Black Panther Party & his deep friendship w/fellow inmates helped him remain “unbroken.”
Mr. Woodfox also spoke with reverence about his mother, her sacrifices, and the lessons she taught that remain with him. Sitting with his lawyer @SamSpital, he read a poem he wrote about her that appears in the book, Solitary. I love that Thurgood Marshall is looking on.

Yesterday this young man was positioned as an “expert”- on what I do not know - and opined about the significance of racial disparities, entitlement of victims of Jim Crow to reparations rather than descendants of slaves, and racial divisions in America.
He is an undergraduate student in the Philosophy Dept at Columbia. But he has developed no expertise in matters that warrant study, rigor, scholarship and/or deep engagement. And yet he was invited to share his views w/a congressional subcommittee.
I respect the opinions, views & experience of young people. But his views are not a counterpoint to Ta-Nehisi’s genuine expertise developed by years of study and scholarship on race in America and reparations. There is no equivalence here.

Boys whose family & life circumstances have left them in tough spots making decisions too weighty for their minds & souls.They are not forgiven. I know you know this @nytdavidbrooks.Could you have spared ink to acknowledge them in your defense of this young man’s moral journey?
How can this, whatever your view, result in a full-on debate from writers in the pages of our most influential papers, w/o the need to acknowledge the devastating reality of lives stolen & shattered by a society that denies childhood to so many Black children.

This young man is #DanyeJones His mom found him hanging from a tree in her backyard on Oct 17th, over two weeks ago. Her family received death threats prior to his murder. He is the 4th Ferguson activist to die under suspicious circumstances.
This story never trended.
The pain in her voice is unbearable. This young man was lynched in St Louis 2 weeks ago, yet still the MSM is silent.

Let's talk @SLMPD and surrounding @stlcountypd and explain some of the broader issues with the police in St. Louis.
The biggest issue is of course that @SLMPD is the most VIOLENT police department in the country, by far.
