I mean, "What is conservatism, and what are its goals?" is about as foundational and important a question—for conservatives, of course, but also for liberals—as you can possibly imagine
This is one reason why intra-conservative debates are generally more interesting but also ultimately more useful than almost anything you can find on the center-left, which is still mired in an odd fusion of managerial incrementalism and reflexive anti-Trumpism
The difficult thing is that US levels of wealth, innovation, and, well, success (of course distributed unequally) come at some expense to morality and happiness. A state that (seriously) promoted the latter would probably have to accept lower levels of sheer economic productivity
