I find Europe’s inability to understand populism a good index of its inability to see itself in the world
The practical implication is that by remaining blind to the real sources of pooulism - the secret sources - one makes it increasingly more powerful

I am very happy with a number of unconventional gambles I made in 2016:
1. Brexit is not a result of lies but a deeply felt view of a majority in UK
2. EU will pay a high price if it does not show some flexibility in negotiation

Brexit preference now at 55%
10% of Leave voters have changed their minds, but 20% of Remain voters now want to Leave
It seems that @GoodwinMJ deceived me by tweeting the previous YouGov poll. But then the one out today actually increases Brexit support to 57%

Long thread on India's general elections, which started yesterday. The general elections are held to elect the member of the lower house of parliament (equivalent to UK's House of Commons and US House). There are 543 members and each full term is 5 years. The first general....
...election was held in 1952. This is the 17th--many terms did not last the full 4 years because the governments collapsed and fresh elections had to be held. The participation rate in the first election was only 45.7%. It has steadily increased to a record high of 66% in 2014.
No single party has ever won more than 50% of the votes. The highest that any party ever got was 48%--Congress in 1984. The Congress party--India's oldest party--is somewhat akin to Mexico's PRI or South Africa's ANC. The Congress has held power for all but 17 years.....

Germany’s far-right party. In the last election they gained seats in the German parliment. This is European politics in a country that experienced utter devastation from a minority party with drastic, diversionary ideology. Surprisingly it is happening again in America & Europe.
Economic crisis followed by Nationalism is a pattern that has been repeated often in history. The political solution @TheDemocrats embrace will need to take this into consideration.

1- I'm finishing up a 2 week trip to the Middle East with a strong sense of foreboding & concern about even more troubles ahead on 4 key fronts: Syria, Yemen, Gaza & Jordan
2- On Syria, the tensions between Israel & Iran have escalated, as we see from the events of the past week. The key question is whether this escalation will spark a wider conflagration that draws more countries more deeply into Syria.
