Last time we looked how kids/juveniles made up 25.8% of the SOR(Sex Offender Registry), but who else is there in disproportionate numbers?
Oh right, black men.
Coincidence? Nope, not in this corrupt system.
Let's dive deeper... >>>
A 2016 study by the University of Albany's Law Division showed 1% of all black men in the US are registered as sex offenders.
"But it's only 1%"
Well, per the 2016 Census, ~22.4million black men live in the US.
Let's add it up... >>>
What's 1% of the black male pop. (22.4m)?
1/100 = x/22,434,909 where 1% = x
That one percent is 224,349 people!
This means black men make up ~30% of the SOR (750,000 total registered people in 2016)!
>>>Stay with me, there's more>>>
"Well, maybe that's just the way things are."
No, not at all. Keep in mind that SORNA (see fact 2) makes SOR registration mandatory and acts as simple as nudity/public urination can land a sex crime conviction.
This is compounded...>>>
...by the fact that black men are 5.9 times more likely to be convicted or a crime than white men, and often receive longer, harsher sentences for the same crimes.
Analysts speculate jury racial bias plays a role in this disparity.
>>>
So then, it should be no wonder why black men are registered on the SOR at TWICE the rate of white men, according to the same study.
But why would the system do this?
Well consider what typically happens to people on the SOR... >>>
Aside from being legally exiled from entire neighborhoods, districts, and regions, registered offenders are around 50% more likely to be the victim of vigilante assault, robbery, or murder, which rarely receives police attention.
>>>
In short, the SOR is a vector for legal, legitimized discrimination, hate, and violence.
The SOR is one of the last remaining sources of legal racism/segregation in the US, and it's used today to harm/displace black communities.
>>>
Lastly, I want to leave you with the words of Trevor Hoppe, the author of the above referenced legal study:
Here's another great resource on this issue that goes into greater detail on how black men are unfairly and disproportionately registered as sex offenders in the US:
theappeal.org/black-men-disp…
I wanted to include stats for other groups on the SOR, but no such studies exist.
From the data, I can say 2 things:
1. Persons of Color make up more than 1/3 of the SOR
2. This representation is disproportionate to population #'s
