During the U.S.-Filipino War, which has been all but wiped from American collective memory, Secretary of War Elihu Root cited American "concentration camps" as reason for U.S. success against the Filipino independence movement:
One American officer called the U.S. concentration camps in the Philippines a "suburb of hell." We still don't know how many died there.

During and after WWII, American leaders—FDR, Truman, other White House officials—referred to the the camps forcibly holding Japanese-Americans as "concentration camps."

And there are the state memorials—at Tule Lake, at Manzanar—specifically calling the Japanese-American WWII camps "concentration camps."
