Last spoilt ballots were in 1995, John Major vs John Redwood: 12 spoilt, 8 positive abstentions, 2 did not vote (1 was Edwina Currie)
Also 24 spoilt ballots in 1989, Margaret Thatcher vs Anthony Meyer, plus 3 abstentions
Last abstention was David Cameron in 2016; before that Julian Lewis in 3rd ballot in 1997, when Wm Hague was elected

So obviously we've had two years of intractable Maybot. And obvs, we're all sick of it. Her "speech" to the nation last week, delivered half an hour late, fell as flat as Boris's leadership bid in 2016. Presumably the Conservative Party will be looking for a new approach? Uh-huh.

Yes, Netanyahu is thinking ahead to probable elections this year.

The law’s origins, however, go further back, & reflect something more fundamental: resistance to demands for equality from Palestinian citizens.
The road to the new Basic Law arguably began w/ proposals in 2011 by Likud’s Avi Dichter. Last night, he said: "We are enshrining this important bill into a law today to prevent even the slightest thought, let alone attempt, to transform Israel to a country of all its citizens".
