Today our cabinet met with Indigenous leaders on how we’re moving forward together in a renewed relationship built on trust, partnership, & mutual respect. There's still more work to do, but we’ve already taken significant steps. Read some of what we’ve accomplished so far ⤵️
As of this May, 85 long-term drinking water advisories have been lifted on reserve. And work is underway to end the remaining long-term advisories, and make sure every person living on reserve has clean and safe drinking water.
We expanded Jordan’s Principle to help kids get the important services they need, and closed the funding gap for child and family services. More than 227,000 requests have since been approved for health, social, and education services.
We’re working with partners to eliminate tuberculosis across Inuit Nunangat by 2030 – Budget 2018 announced $27.5 million to support the Inuit-specific approach to tuberculosis elimination.
We’re making historic investments in mental wellness & suicide prevention, including support for the National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy, $118.2 million for essential mental health services, & expanding Mental Wellness Teams to 344 communities, up from 86 since June 2016.
We’re helping small and medium-sized Métis businesses and entrepreneurs succeed, and funding more opportunities for skills training and jobs.
Strong and safe communities will give Indigenous kids the best start in life. We’re investing in infrastructure projects for safe and affordable housing, better water and wastewater projects, community centres, playgrounds, and sports fields.
We’re building new schools, investing in early learning & child care, and supporting language, culture, & special education programs. We've made historic investments in post-secondary education for Indigenous students, and have closed the funding gap for K-12 education.
In February, we introduced co-developed legislation to reduce the number of Indigenous kids in foster care, improve child & family services, and reunite more families. Today, that legislation received Royal Assent.
Parliament also adopted legislation that will support work by Indigenous communities to protect, preserve, and revitalize their languages, which are fundamental to their cultures and heritage.
