Six years ago today, the Supreme Court decided Shelby County v. Holder, and I wrote this @nytimes oped. Here are some parts of it

If anything, the situation with voting rights in this country has deteriorated even more precipitously than I predicted when I wrote that oped about #SCOTUS's Shelby County decision six years ago.
And depending on how things break in the census and partisan gerrymandering cases, things may be about to get a whole lot worse.

When I look at these stats from @SCOTUSBlog, it seems just about certain that Chief Roberts will write in the partisan gerrymandering cases. (I've said earlier I expect Alito to have the census case)

Beakdown of votes in this 1st Amendment case (especially Alito concurring and Chief partially dissenting, Sotomayor dissenting) is not what I would have expected here. J. Alito goes out of his way to contrast our strong 1st Amendment with viewpoint discrimination around the world

6 years ago today, the Supreme Court’s Shelby County decision gutted the #VotingRightsAct. Several states then rushed to impose new discriminatory restrictions on voting. The right to vote is fundamental. We should be making it easier, not harder, to take part in our democracy.
Both the Supreme Court and our democracy face a similar test today: whether to allow a citizenship question on the #Census. The Trump administration has blatantly misrepresented the partisan origins of the question—to increase Republican voting power. oversight.house.gov/sites/democrat…
That includes Commerce Secretary Ross, who falsely & inexcusably claimed DOJ is “the one” that asked for the question when I questioned him during a Senate hearing.

Today, the Supreme Court decided FMI v. Argus Leader Media, a case that may have an outsize impact on public understanding of private services and technologies used by the government to perform official functions.

Here’s a quick explanation of why. /1

The case was about the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which entitles members of the public to ask federal agencies for their records. The agencies have to turn requested records over unless they fall within an “exemption” to FOIA. /2
One of the exemptions — Exemption 4 — allows agencies to refuse to turn over “confidential” commercial information. The FMI case was about when a record turned over to the government by a private company is “confidential” for purposes of Exemption 4. /3

Hey @charliekirk11, do you also want the history books to teach about The Great Compromise of 1877, when Republicans struck a deal to let GOP'er Hayes become president. In exchange, they pulled federal troops out of the last three southern states. That led to Jim Crow. RT this.
And guess what @charliekirk11? As a result of Republicans agreeing to that compromise, they dealt the death knell to Blacks in Congress. And Black Republicans said the @GOP sold them out for agreeing to the 1877 Compromise. Do you want THIS taught in school? I dare you to RT this

Today’s Supreme Court ruling in Carpenter v. United States was a major victory.

The Court sent a strong message by recognizing that because of "seismic shifts in digital technology," cell phone tracking has the capability to lay private lives bare to government inspection. (1/7) An image of a scale, with the text:

In this case, Carpenter v. United States, the government argued that Mr. Carpenter had no reasonable expectation of privacy in his cell phone records, which it obtained without a warrant—while also arguing the location data was incriminating. eff.org/cases/carpente…

Thread: Six years ago today, I found out that I have #MultipleSclerosis. A battle I wasn’t prepared for, but with the help of my family and friends, I continue to fight.

I hope my story will help someone else with #MS or a loved one of someone with MS.
I’ve always been in love with athletics and exercise, I played EVERYTHING growing up and that didn’t change as I entered adulthood.

I remained a very active person, so when my body began to feel “off”, I knew something was wrong.
One morning I woke up and my legs didn’t really have sensation, sort of like “pins and needles” when you’ve been sitting too long.

I didn’t think much of it, and I decided to go play football that day anyway. Most of the game I felt fine, but then my legs felt sensation-less.
