@AOC, for a long time now: "Hey everyone, refugees are being held in concentration camps!"
RWNJs: "She said ICE Nazis are gassing children in death camps!"
@AOC: "Actually, that's not what I sa..."
@HolocaustMuseum historian @EdnaFriedberg, sensibly: "just, please don't resort to CARELESS Holocaust analogies," because: Godwin." ushmm.org/information/pr…
(@sfmnemonic -- generically, not in response to this: "tho if a thing's ACTUALLY like Nazis it's OK to say so.")
@Becky_USHMM, pointing out the 17-months-old-unrelated-to-AOC-etc. parts: "Um, WTAF?" rebeccaerbelding.com/statement/
@worldisraelnews: "Oops, sorry, our bad. We take it back."
So, all good, right?
Nah.
@HolocaustMuseum, freaking out over a non-story: "Remember what @EdnaFriedberg sensibly said before about avoiding "careless" analogies? Yeah, forget that. Actually, don't make ANY "analogies between the Holocaust and other events," PERIOD, EVER...
.@HolocaustMuseum (cont'd): "Also too? Watch us throw our own colleague/historian @Becky_USHMM (who didn't even say what World Israel News claimed she said!) under the bus -- twice!"
Which: oh, dear @HolocaustMuseum, our indispensable friends: You don't believe this. You KNOW the Shoah wasn't a one-off that CAN'T happen again, because otherwise "Never Again" would be meaningless. ENABLING accurate analogies to current events IS your mission. You KNOW this.
I suspect, @HolocaustMuseum, what's really happening is, you're terrified Trump + Congressional Rs + Evangelical Christian Zionist donors et al. will believe you oppose interning children or support @AOC (which: yeah!, but I get it, "development" ($) requires neutrality)...
But if you worry that bad PR or funding cuts would be a worse השואה than watching a deranged authoritarian allocate human rights based on religion + ethnicity, witnessing children in cages, or losing a good colleague like Becky? Then you've lost your way. #NeverAgain
