ProPublica is doing wonderful journalism on the Navy's profound failures to train and support sailors adequately. Their previous pieces on the destroyer collisions are absolutely engrossing and terrifying. We must do better.
@RadioFreeTom What do you think's up with the Navy lately? Recruitment troubles? And (serious Q): in a serious conflict with Russia in which GPS is disrupted, could we navigate our ships effectively? Are map/compass/dead reckoning (let alone sextant) even taught any longer?
2/ Two destroyer collisions, + Iran's capture of U.S. sailors in 2016, were caused by navigation errors -- and that's WITH GPS technology, which is very easy to disrupt. Good reads on the problem + the search for solutions, incl. sextant training, in next tweet.
