My 14-year-old son attends a boys' school in @LBofBexley school which has a large percentage of boys from a disadvantaged background and without many positive role models. So I approached the deputy head and asked to invite successful Black men who could be positive role models.
Those men were from various occupations to show the boys a range of careers out there. I chose year 9 boys because most of them were choosing their options and didn't know what to do. I invited a solicitor, a business analyst, a forex trader /2 times cancer survivor, magistrate.
I also invited an entrepreneur who had previously attended that school. These sessions took place over 6 month period during assembly. The feedback received: thank you so much for the programme of speakers you arranged to deliver presentations in our Year 9 assemblies this year.
All the speakers spoke with passion and conviction and provided our students with insights into a whole range of careers and opportunities. They engaged our students and raised their awareness of how they can fulfil their potential and contribute to for the good of society.
The students appreciated the fact that adults, beyond their usual realms of home, school, faith communities & extra-curricular activities were interested in their futures and wanted their world to be full of possibilities. As a community, we are so thankful for the profound gift
I have no doubt that the messages shared in these presentations will live on in the hearts and minds of our boys and that the seeds that you have sown will yield a wonderful harvest as they move through the important years that lie ahead.
A THREAD - This thread shows that we all can be part of the solution to #youthviolence. Start small, equip young people, raise their aspirations, increase representation& provide opportunities! #youthculture #adolescent #CommunityEngagement. Thank you to the men who inspired them
One of the speakers' shares a story of it has led to him speaking before 1600 heads of schools:facebook.com/ValueOfKingKay…
