Time Management as a Student-Athlete
This will be primarily aimed at Freshmen due to how challenging the transition can be.
Being on time is the biggest factor in gaining both your coaches and teammate's respect. Always make sure you know where your classes and the facilities you will be training at are prior to going the first time.
If you don't know where a building is, grab your other freshman friends and walk around till you find it. This will make sure that you will be on time the next day.
By grabbing your friends, you are also being a leader which is huge on an athletic team.
When you finish registering for classes, take a screenshot of your week at a glance. If you are a person who doesn't always remember where to be, SET THIS AS YOUR BACKGROUND.
This can save you a ton of time when anxiety kicks in.
Take the screenshot and add it into a calendar app as events(I use @Google calendar). You will want to manage the event so that it sends you a reminder for 15 min. prior.
After your classes are in there, make sure to add your practices as best you can.
Log on to Canvas and download the link to add your canvas due dates to your brand new calendar. This will auto sync the calendars together.
Know when your classes are and do not skip them.
Do not be the freshman that skips class and then is the cause of why the team has to run.
The easiest way to learn a new college system is from veteran players. They won't want to help you if you cause them to run...
Eventually, you will run into a time management conflict.
Example: Tutoring for 1 hour at 5 and Weights at 5:15
The best way to handle this is to be proactive. Let everyone involved know and if you will have to skip tutoring or weights, go ahead and text your coach.
Do not wait until the night before the test to study.
Yes, we all did it in high school. No this is not high school.
Put in the effort to be great in all aspects of life, it will show in your performance on the field.
Be the freshman that your coach never has to talk to about discipline. You do not want your coach hearing negative things about you from RA's, Professors, or even Tutors.
Imagine yourself as a coach, which player would you trust more?
The one who is always on time and always works hard or the one who isn't always on time and takes the easiest way out.
As a coach, I'll take the first player 100/100 times. I want people who want to be great.
College will be where you meet some of the best friends of your life. Make sure that you use it to your advantage.
Freshman year can be difficult. If you have any questions, feel free to DM and I will do my best to answer them.
Until then, War Eagle.
