THREAD: 1/ The #G20 summit ended with a trade war truce and an unexpected invitation for a meeting on the North Korean border. Here are the main takeaways from our reporter @sdonnan bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ The big show at the G-20 summit that wrapped up on Saturday was always going to be the meeting between @realdonaldtrump and China’s Xi Jinping. And it didn’t disappoint. The two leaders agreed to a truce in their trade wars and new talks to resolve their differences.
/ That will be a relief to businesses and financial markets around the world bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ The big surprise was Trump’s decision to at least partially lift a U.S. blacklisting of China's Huawei. He said he would allow American companies to again begin selling to the company, which his own administration has declared a threat to U.S. national security.
/ That will help ease fears the U.S. and China are heading into a new technological cold war, at least in the short term. Though Trump said he would link a final decision on Huawei to success in trade negotiations. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ Huawei itself seemed to be caught by surprise.
/ Trump also threw North Korea a surprise by inviting Kim Jong-un to meet him in on the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas, which he is due to visit on Sunday. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ At a press conference in Osaka, Trump said the North Koreans had already reacted positively to his invitation, though plans for a handshake had not been finalized.
/ The U.S. remained at odds with other G-20 countries over climate change, however. A final communique said: “The United States reiterates its decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement because it disadvantages American workers and taxpayers.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ After ignoring questions about the murder of Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi during a meeting with Crown Price Mohammed bin Salman earlier in the day, he told reporters he raised the killing in private and called it “horrible”. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ Trump also said he had been invited to visit Russia by Vladimir Putin to mark the 75th anniversary of the Soviet defeat of the Nazis. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
/ That is a visit that would also invite plenty of scrutiny. Russian officials earlier this month suggested western celebrations of the 75th anniversary of D-Day belittled the contributions of the Soviet Union in defeating Hitler.
