But what if who we are is precisely this: a country and a people divided?
In some sense, we're already living in and with a "deep, messy pluralism" whether we like it or not. We no longer agree, if we ever did, on foundational questions, including on what it means to be American

Yet we're (probably?) gonna get through it
So we're a de facto deep pluralist country—even if we act like it isn't. If you accept this premise, then we may be better off embracing the way we already are instead of pretending for a consensus that will likely never come
