/San Francisco is not the friendliest city. Here is a thread of some of the altercations I've seen over the past couple of years of living here...
/Yesterday I saw a woman (walking two small dogs) get right in a skateboarder's face and scream "FUCK YOU!!!!" at the top of her lungs. The skater said "Hey, the cops are right there!" She walked off, still screaming "Fuck you!!"
/Recently I saw a guy threatening to beat up an elderly couple in Tenderloin. Some bystanders intervened to protect the couple, after which the attacker started making finger-guns and them and screaming he would shoot them, before running off.
/Near Union Square, I saw a guy trying to grab a woman's phone. She held on to the phone and crouched down and started crying. I went to help, but before I got there a bystander and a shopkeeper emerged to drive the attacker away.
/Several times I've seen bikers scream at cars on the street, for reasons unknown (maybe because they thought the cars were being dangerous?). Twice I saw the bikers chased the cars down the street, screaming profanities at them.
/One time I was on Castro street and a guy in a truck randomly screamed "Faggot!" at me at an intersection. I wondered if he had driven miles to SF just to yell that at someone on Castro.
/My friend (a 5'1" woman) was punched in the head and had her phone stolen in the Financial District. The guy was later caught and the phone recovered.
/Another person I know was followed down the street by a guy shouting racial slurs at her (she's Asian). She started filming it partway through and posted the video to FB.
/Near the 16th St. BART stop I saw a guy chasing a woman down the street and trying to grab her backpack.
/A woman parked at an intersection blamed an old guy who was picking up bottles and cans for scratching her (illegally parked) car. She followed him down the street screaming at him.
/On Market St., a guy kept grabbing the arm of some guy who was walking with a girl, and screaming at him. The couple quickly walked away and escaped.
/In the financial district, a couple of guys walked up to some girls who may or may not have been Chinese tourists, blocked them with their bodies, and wouldn't let them pass, until I walked toward them and they walked away.
/A guy on Haight was lying in the middle of the street, screaming and bleeding from a knife wound.
/You see people blame "the homeless" for these incidents, but at least half of the screaming I see on the street is being done by people who look quite well-off.
/Anyway, I don't know why SF has this edge of tension and anger, when it's really not a very violent city at all. Maybe the rent crisis has everyone on edge? Anyway, I definitely didn't see this stuff in NYC.

Here's someone else's thread of SF unfriendliness.
