TIL, that every Alabama governor elected since the Civil War was sworn into office with their hand placed on Jefferson Davis's bible. This is just one of many points that comes out in this fascinating conversation about religion, race, and politics. player.fm/series/the-ezr…
Another interesting point that emerges around the 20 minute mark has to do with church and state. It appears that the increasing politicization of white evangelical Protestantism since the 1970s has driven many young people away from the faith.
The founding generation wanted to separate church and state largely because they wanted to keep the state out of the church. They worried, rightly it seems, that politicizing religion would harm the integrity of the faith and turn believers into pawns of politicians.
The irony, of course, is that today's evangelical conservatives think of themselves as great admirers of "the founders" and their original vision. Yet they seem to have taken the wrong lesson from the people they claim to admire.
