What does progress look like? Example of the Women's March. It brought women together, but it is not a perfect movement. Disagreements among activists, competition between people. Good intentions but also some potential for harm. #FASSM

Women's March, "the resistance," and #MeToo have been large and sustaining over the past two years, since the 2016 election. #FASSM
Two important books: Together We Rise: Behind the Scenes at the Protest Heard Around the World, by the Women's March organizers, and Good and Mad, by Rebecca Traister.
"Abundance thinking": the abundance is the people in this fight. Survivors who are brave and willing to speak out. #FASSM
Abundance is a mobilizing force for others. This is what progress looks like. #FASSM
Members of movement will never all agree and one person will never be at the top of this movement. Need to define goals as contributing rather than competing for attention. #FASSM

Working to develop a regulatory framework in the UK. Despite the flaws, US benefits from having Title IX. #FASSM

Once there's a policy and procedure and an institutional response, it can close down responses to behavior. Institutional change stalls. #FASSM
Progress can also mean that an new industry moves in to provide the services and responses that the institution doesn't feel it can address. When we say investigations should be independent, then we create an industry for that. Who gets that work? #FASSM
When it's outsources, who is responsible when that service fails? #FASSM (This is a HUGE issue!)
How do you change a space that is inequitable? Racism as well as sexism. Just laying a solution over the top does not create the deep change that is needed. #FASSM
Work on these kinds of issues is often perceived as outside the discipline of the people doing it, but institutions need to recognize that it is not. It is deeply a part of all disciplines. #FASSM

Process and regulation only get you so far. They also carry risk because they can be weaponized and used against the vulnerable. Inequality of protection for people with more resources. #FASSM
Educational communities are deeply social: people are often harassed by people they have real relationships with, which complicates coming forward. #FASSM
It's important to build structures that prevent these problems from happening in the first place. That protects the social fabric better. #FASSM
Many Title IX coordinators and administrators care deeply about helping survivors, though they are constrained by their institutions. But acknowledging their solidarity when it exists is important. #FASSM
Need to separate power from due process. Note who has power and who doesn't. But all are entitled to fair/due process. "A rising tide lifts all boats." #FASSM
Build solidarity with people who are not obvious allies and by recognizing the variety of victim/survivor experience. #FASSM
The effects of harassment or assault can also vary widely. Need to broaden the discussion of intersectionality and experience across differences. #FASSM
Audience comment: need to note and amplify work being done by people here and elsewhere working on issue. Bring it to chairs, deans, provosts. Boost awareness. #FASSM
Someone suggests idea of walkouts: if there is a session or event with a known predator, organize a walkout. Directing attention away from that person. #FASSM
