As I mentioned, this war is now heading into a very ugly phase. aljazeera.com/news/2019/07/d…
Initial reports say two separate bombs dropped on Tajoura arms depot hit migrants housed on military base. Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade, Eighth Brigade (Nawasi), Bab Tajoura Brigade, and Joint Deterrence and Intervention Force Abu Salim are part of Tripoli Protection Force.
The migrants in Tajoura had previously been evacuated after capture by the coast guard in rafts and handed off to the militias. Damage videos indicate a 500lb or similar heavy munition typically dropped by jets. Or two well placed missiles.
It was Europe that insisted that Libya be paid to control the flow of migrants violating human rights and refoulement laws and putting the migrants in grim, horrific and now deadly conditions.
The support of detention centers by the presence by very vocal European NGOs and the UN in Libya will create a tertiary effect of legal investigation and publicity unrelated to the actual conflict inside Libya. ansamed.info/ansamed/en/new…
Nuances/history/influence in Libya are important There is no good/bad, east/west, old/new simplicity to the conflict. Bt let's make sure we name and shame outside actors for both causing, encouraging and not preventing, incompetent rash events like this. interactive.aljazeera.com/aje/2019/whats…
The UN consistently proves that it is toothless in preventing violence in ungoverned spaces. That is because it has no mechanism without donors usually from developing nations. But they could sanction illegal weapon providers from foreign nations tomorrow reliefweb.int/report/libya/i…
All the UN needs are three anonymous sources and evidence to shut down financial and travel to individuals. Conversely a simple letter of intent to the security council and a short waiting period is all that is needed to provide arms and training. un.org/securitycounci…
The UN maintains meticulous research, data, evidence and images on actors, weapons, transfers and illegal acts via numerous researchers and documents on Libya. Let's see if they do something now. securitycouncilreport.org/libya/
If you take the time to read this latest report from 2018 you will see that all the research has been done to an impressive standard. Things have become much worse since the new coup attempt. The UN simply needs to act. securitycouncilreport.org/atf/cf/%7B65BF…
2016: An attempt by Khalifa al-Ghwell to destabilize the Libyan Fayez al Seraj govt is responded to almost immediately with both UN and US sanctions. treasury.gov/resource-cente…
2019: An attempt to overthrow the govt by Khalifa Haftar on April 4 has resulted in 739 dead, including 41 civilians, and 4407 wounded, including 137 civilians. The deaths of 44 migrants. UAE, Egypt, KSA, Qatar, Sudan, France and Turkey are belligerents.

2015: I went to visit a loaded oil tanker that had just been hit by a Haftar's jet, insisting it was carrying weapons for ISIS. I then hung out with the Libyan Coast Guard as they explained their concerns about migrants. Things are different on the ground.
