If open source is any good the US is largely incorporating the Arctic into its overall distributed lethality paradigm. The last disconnected battlespace was the area under the ice. Somehow USN has been able to fix that.

This is in apparent contrast to the Russian efforts in the Arctic, which are focused on creating a specialized asymmetry in that theater.

The question that needs answering is even if Putin gains Arctic subsea dominance, what does it get him? Even assuming climate change it won't turn into a sea lane any time this century. Russian subs couldn't stop the ICBM's crossing either way overhead.
He gets his frozen kingdom yet it avails him nothing obvious. By contrast the US is asymmetrically responding by trying to dominate orbital space, in which Putin cannot compete. Yet he's not stupid. So what's he doing?
One long shot guess is that it's the Chinese, not the US that Putin's afraid of.

1/ Today is 8 years since we founded @Segment! Like many startups, our first two years were brutal. The last six have been an insane ride. We made so many mistakes along the way, and owe so much to our early customers.
2/ While attending MIT and Y Combinator in Summer 2011 we built a classroom lecture tool called ClassMetric. YC constantly told us to solve real problems for our customers, but we somehow ignored this and 80% of the students just opened up Facebook instead of using our tool.
3/ Next we built a web analytics tool to compete with @Mixpanel and @googleanalytics, but they were already great tools... we had somehow managed to ignore YC's advice again. Real customers didn't have an issue with analytics.
