Joe Biden falsely claimed in a speech yesterday that he had been “against” the 1994 crime bill’s funding for building state prisons.

He was vocally in favor of this funding, both during the 1994 debate and for years afterward. My fact-check with @KFILE: cnn.com/2019/07/07/pol…
Biden’s campaign didn’t reject our finding that Biden supported the prison construction funding he said he was “against.”

What he meant yesterday, the campaign said, was that he’d wanted to spend less than Republicans did - $6B instead of the $10B that ended up in the bill.
Biden could have accurately said that he wanted to spend fewer billions on building state prisons than Republicans wanted to spend. But the claim that he was against spending money on state prisons, period, is sharply at odds with reality, we found. cnn.com/2019/07/07/pol…
Finally: Biden’s very false claim on his record on prison funding came during a part of the speech in which he was arguing that his record on the crime bill had been “grossly misrepresented.”
