Not too much reading between lines required = checks. /1
The issue is still on detail - since Irish have dilemma. If they spell out how checks work, Brexiteers will say that a border 'works'...when in reality it the opposite of working. /2
Back in March HMRC very clearly spelled this out in meeting with NI businesses...the 'no deal' plan on the UK side basically can't last. /3

So. Am thinking of ways to explain why @borisjohnson's plan of just paying for a 'standstill' transition while ditching the Withdrawal Agreement is nuts. It's nonsense. Here's what I came up with... 1/thread
@BorisJohnson Because it sounds kinda reasonable

1. We'll guarantee all EU citizens' rights into UK law

2. We'll pay to play in the EU for a 'standstill' while we fix up an FTA and the Irish border

No backstop, no handcuffs...c'mon, what's not to like? /2
@BorisJohnson One way to think about it, is that without a WA you are basically 'out of contract'.

Article 50 allows you to leave, but legally be treated like an EU member state while you fix up the future.

Without it, you are fixing the house with no roof over your head. In winter./3

So as Brexiteers try to head of attempts to shutdown "prorogation" as a route to a 'no deal'...a question looms. What about the DUP @duponline ...they are oddly silent on this question. But they will be critical to it 1/Thread
@duponline Because imagine if @BorisJohnson wins, gets his way and prorogues Parliament ahead of a November 1 Queen's speech...he's still going to need the DUP to back him.

Much is made of the fiscal multiplier, the concept that spending by government, or reductions in taxes (ideally of those who will spend that extra money rather than hoard it) will multiply spending, incomes and investment in the economy. 1/5
What is less discussed is that the opposite is also true. If you reduce spending or excessively tax those that would have spent that income, you create a negative multiplier effect where each £ of reduced gov spending results in lower spending, incomes and investment. 2/5
If we take the NHS as an example, estimates for the fiscal multiplier lie between 2.5 and 6.1 depending on where the money is spent. In other words, every £1 spent by gov on the NHS creates between £2.50 and £6.10 worth of economic activity, the expenditure has multiplied. 3/5
