Every since I mentioned @KamalaHarris in a Tweet a few days ago, the torrent of horrendously insulting, racist, misogynistic & obscene things Tweeted at me about her by Trumpers & trolls is like nothing I’ve ever seen. And it was compounded when @LauraIngraham Tweeted at me. 1/8
It’s been a unique experience-to say the least. I thought Harris had a good quote about Trump’s July4 thing—which she did. I’m an observer and critic of politicians of all sides. And I’m not even a Harris supporter. Or a Democrat. But I am a supporter of civility and respect. 2/8
And the lack of civility and respect shown towards Harris in public forums is just a glimpse into what she, her family, and her campaign must be already dealing with—and will surely only increase in the days ahead. And it’s unique to her as a black woman. 3/8
This is a moment—and an example—of how Trump’s toxic leadership climate and personal example are most dangerous and destructive. I’d love to think we could appeal to him to be more constructive and mature. But we all know that ain’t gonna happen. 4/8
Instead, I think it’s critical that we name it—and plan around him (as a nation)—for it. And that starts with explaining to those that will listen that behavior of that kind is unacceptable. And although the President won’t condemn it—that we as leaders—and as citizens—will. 5/8
We set the tone. We are the ones that can push back and throw flags on hatred. The 2020 election is about so many things. And it’s a giant gut check for America. But most of all, I hope that afterward, our country isn’t so damaged by it that it’s beyond repair. 6/8
That starts w us all (regardless of party) maintaining & protecting the norms & civility that should define us as Americans. It should start at the top. But for now, it must start & continue everywhere else. Our children are watching. And our future is at stake. #StakesIsHigh 7/8
And we’ll have a new episode of @angryamericans posted tomorrow morning at 0-dark-30. I definitely get into all this. And much more. If you’ve never listened before, you can subscribe for free now at GetAngry.us. #IfYoureNotAngryYoureNotPayingAttention
