Cricket fans in India fondly recall the 1983 and 2011 World Cup wins

But for the generation of the 80s the World Championship of 1985 ranked almost as high as the 83 World Cup

It felt like a World Cup win and was regarded as such
Today, people hardly even recall that there was a tournament in 1985 Down under that we won comprehensively - winning every match, and bowling out the opposition in each match
This was a tournament held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of European settlement of Victoria

India dominated the tournament. Defeated Pakistan in the final.

Though we got lucky as West Indies were in a different group, and never faced them. Pak defeated WI in the semis
The 1985 World Championship side was distinctly superior to the one that played in 1983

Interestingly it was captained by Gavaskar and not Kapil Dev

And it had a lot more fire-power that the 83 side lacked
Sivaramakrishnan - a fine leg spinner (no spinner in that class in the 83 side)

The very talented Sadanand Vishwanath

The young Mohammad Azharuddin

The resourceful Ravi Shastri - who was the player of the tournament
Maybe not quite as strong as some of the more recent Indian ODI sides

But definitely stronger than the 1983 side

On the Mughals making India rich -

As per the research of Broadberry / Bishnupriya, per-capita income in India reduced from $682 in 1600 to $510 in 1810 when the Empire was winding down

Even in its century of expansion (1600-1700), PCI dropped from $682 to $622

Public Finance is something I am mostly ignorant about

Tried to get some sense by reading up a bit on the 14th Finance Commission

Among other things the Finance Commission determines the allocation of Central Taxes across states

The Criteria baffle me

There are so many things wrong about this kind of allocation -

In an ideal world the Central govt should not redistribute Central taxes to states. But spend it using its own discretion

With the states spending its own taxes and not relying on the Central govt
But if at all you have to allocate, this seems such a terrible way to do it

Its so very arbitrary and quirky. So hard to rationalize

The allocation is not based on the Center's assessment on the current state of public goods and which state is most lacking in public goods

But his "secret sauce" is under analyzed

A closed face technique
Back-and across movement that practically eliminates the "outside edge" by getting inside the line of the ball
This is a technique reminiscent of the great Don Bradman himself - who had a similar closed face technique

Which was derided in his time. Yet worked exceptionally well
The Don in an interview he gave Ray Martin in 1996 elaborated on this aspect of his technique

I was told the same thing to which I say that I understand and ask them for the way into the HC. "So you're going?" to which I respond in affirmative. They ask my name, take down my car number and clear the way.

The IAF has not made any demand for it. HAL CMD R Madhavan recently said HAL no longer waits for IAF’s requirements. "We're confident of doing R&D and offering a product. We're even looking at markets outside,” he said.

The amazing fact is that it was to become our national bird but it was denied the honour for the worry that its name might be misspelt! Bastard 😒😒

The bird has vanished from nearly 95% of its historical range.
