Whoa @loleen_berdahl I did not realize you had published this book coauthored with Keith Archer! I think you cover many of the issues I would want covered in a “How to do empirical research in political science”, well beyond Canada!
Honest assessment, from a quick read: excellent volume (feels designed for undergraduates but I would happily assign it in a preparatory course for a Masters program in social science). Minor quibbles: super short qualitative analysis chapter and “writing the report”.
I’m adding the table of contents as I strongly believe it’s a solid complement to another volume I also like a lot, Writing Empirical Political Science by @LeanneCPowner both great books (ToC from Archer/Berdahl, with Canadian focus making it especially interesting too)

I hate when people ask me to recommend THE BOOK or ONE BOOK or THE BEST BOOK - but upon re-reading Zerubavel, I would say This Is IT. The one book you all should have on your bookshelves and read and come back to it often. Yes, much of what he says will sound "common sense"
Zerubavel makes a really key point: spacing writing sessions too much makes it hard to come back to a manuscript and it also makes it difficult to sustain any gained momentum. For example, this week I've been SUPER consistent in writing every day. Next week... HOLIDAYS.

Continuing my threads on active reading, highlighting & scribbling. My undergrad students ask me how to identify the main idea of a paper. From the title, I see this paper is on the formality/informality dichotomy. The authors say Lipton 1978 is an early critique (2nd paragraph)
Given that I’m writing a paper on informal waste pickers, knowing the early critiques of the formal/informal dichotomy would be useful to me. I do a backward citation tracing exercise and find Bromley 1978.
(I misquoted author in my first tweet - early critique is by Bromley 1978, which offers a series of items that allow you to detect whether an activity can be defined as formal or as informal - see my screen grab) - doing this allows me to follow Guha-Khasnobis et al and Bromley.

I have written several threads on why you should diversify your citations, cite PoC, marginalized scholars, and those from the Global South, in other languages, etc. BUT I want to add one to the mix as it's the subject of a current pet peeve of mine. Cite ACROSS DISCIPLINES.
I saw an RCT (yes, THAT RCT) where authors are running a field experiment on protests & social movements that doesn't cite the literature on protests and social movements (smartly, however, don't think I didn't notice, they DO cite prominent scholars who run field experiments)
This is an economics RCT which purports to understand the politics and mechanisms of motivation to protest, which you know, political science and sociology already have analyzed at length. I'm getting to the point where I'm bored to death of parochialism across disciplines.

It's is a short metaphorical essay on progress in human life.

2/ Combined, the results are a ‘gap analysis’ which can inform future research. Both studies were funded by @Charity_Futures, re its work establishing an Institute of Charity at Oxford University. But the findings can inform the agenda of any researchers in this terrain.

Many Iranians criticised one of BBC Farsi’s journalists for her comments on Iran-Hezbullah relations. Some have even threatened her that she won’t be allowed to go back to Iran after the fall of the regime. Many Iranians believe some of @bbcpersian journalists support the regime.
In the past few days some anti-BBC slogans have been chanted by the protesters in Iran. In a comment one of BBCFarsi journalist claims that ‘Trump wants to turn Iran into another Syria by starting a civil war etc’. The same propaganda which is pumped out by Iranian state media.
Some of @BBCPersian journalists block anyone who criticises them. One of its journalists in particular has publicly supported A.Khamenei on his social media pages. I have written to a few MPs and the BBC about. Will see if BBC is interested in opening an investigation.

I'm seeing accounts call themselves "bot hunters" & run prominent resistance accounts thru sites like botcheck.me. If the site says the account is a #Bot, they tweet that info.

It's a tactic to discredit #Resistance accounts & sow #chaos & #Division. THREAD 1/5
These fake "bot hunters" count on people believing them & blocking the accounts they call bots. This reduces the resistance account's reach & effectiveness.

Educate yourself on identifying bots so you don't fall for it. 2/5 #panic #disinformation #chaos
