Sometimes I wonder if Pentecostal Pastors remember that they started their churches in their 20s and upturned popular religion then. It means God's already working on their replacements now.
Today's 20 year olds are absolutely crazy - nothing like their elders. This is both beautiful and terrifying. I sense another major religious shift. The best thing the older generation can do is to help ground them in systemic theology, not resist change.
I used to wonder why older Pastors didn't "get it" or know "what's going on". After all, they have the Holy Spirit. Don't they get expo? Also, I've met many Pastors. They are genuinely good people. So, how did so many arrive at this place of generational disconnect?
I realised you cannot know what you do not know. It's like there's a code embedded in every generation. I can't understand my younger nephew's musical taste or seamless aptitude for technology. It's just embedded.
At best, I can only relate to him by discernment, acceptance and understanding. But he exists in a paradigm that is not mine.
This generation will be dealing with new religious challenges: post-truth, gender fluidity, porn addiction, tech addiction, suicide, depression, atheism etc.
The older generation can't even keep up with the changes talk less of communicate coherent theology about these subjects. Many still think Apologetics is not as spiritual as fasting and praying.
Meanwhile, as Ecclesiastes says, there really is nothing new under the sun. It will just take an uncommon wisdom to parse these issues.
