I really want to know if all the folks whose battle cry is "seeking asylum is legal" think that these conditions are acceptable if someone did, in fact, break the law. Y'all need to interrogate that shit. Under what circumstances is this OK? If the answer is "none," say that.
What ICE and Border Control do to human beings is not OK. Sometimes those things fall within the bounds of the law and sometimes they don't, but they are always wrong and worthy of protest. If we only speak up for folks who didn't break our precious laws, what are we saying here?
Do not fetishize the law. It is not a moral instrument. Believe me, I've studied it & I've been through the system as someone who broke it. The law doesn't divide us into categories of good & bad. It devalues & disposes of folks who are deemed as not having a place in our society
When we acknowledge that these conditions are never OK and that someone having broken a law does not justify what ICE and Border Control do to ppl, we are then faced with tough questions about the system as a whole. It's easier to stick to narratives of respectability. Don't tho.
We need to be asking questions about how things got this bad -- how we have normalized torturous conditions to a point where what's happening now wasn't straight up unthinkable. We need to face the things we couldn't bear to face before. It's time y'all.

Pelosi's BS about Twitter reflects a long-standing establishment beef with marginalized people who develop a significant following on here. It upsets their preferred power dynamics that people who aren't their brand of elite have a profound effect on public discourse.
I'm tired of people like Pelosi acting like Twitter ain't shit while also trying to censor people's behavior here. As tho the platform were at once irrelevant and also super important. She knows what happens here affects the larger scheme of politics. She resents it.
In Pelosi's mind, people like AOC cut in line, in terms of clout and power, by developing a large following on social media. She doesn't want them to leverage what power they have bc them having it at all is unacceptable to her.

Please don't look at what's happening & think that a system that was otherwise humane suddenly produced the conditions you're hearing about solely bc of Trump. These camps are what happens when a demagogue gets control of an already cruel and violent system. This is escalation.

Something I'm thinking about today: I am worried about whose leadership people will attach themselves to as the reality of the climate crisis sinks in. There are no good answers. No easy ways out. But some ppl will offer simple solutions to complex problems & ppl will want that.
I wince a little when people say that the U.S. government has no plan for millions of climate refugees, because they do. It's to slam the gates shut and let them die. Any other interpretation of what's gone on, policy and rhetoric wise, is a little naive.
While you might hope that we'd take to the streets en masse as such inhumanity played out, we're not on track to do so. When it comes to our treatment of immigrants, new horrors hit the news everyday & the only ppl taking action are organizers who've been on the issue for yrs.

Thread: the Trump @StateDept tampered with key evidence for women's #asylum cases, and undermined the impartiality of our human rights reporting system. Fellow immigration attorney Joanna Gaughan caught them red handed:
2/ Every year @StateDept releases a report on each country's human rights practices. @TheJusticeDept immigration judges and @DHSgov asylum officers use these reports as evidence for asylum cases & emphasize them over other sources bc DoS is considered impartial and reliable.
3/ The photo? Honduras report, domestic violence. L is 2016, R is 2017 (latest available). Yellow describes the nice laws to protect women. Pink was eliminated in 2017, explains that the laws aren't actually enforced, and that rape and dv remain serious problems in Honduras.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).
