pretty big turnout here outside the charlottesville federal courthouse to protest the immigrant detention camps. we’re lining the sidewalk all the way around the corner.
glad to see both our current state delegate, toscano, and our incoming delegate @SallyLHudson here supporting immigrants’ rights.

a local church is providing sanctuary for an indigenous kaqchikel woman from guatemala. you can support her fight for asylum here:
“we have to stop saying there are children in cages,” says the event organizer. their parents are in cages, too. human beings are in cages. no one deserves that. #LightsforLiberty
she is bringing the heat with a strong prison abolitionist message - we cannot advocate for the end of these detention centers without calling for the end of the prison industrial system everywhere, highlighting our local jail’s recent decision to continue working with ICE.
an organizer is now reading in both english and spanish a message from maria, the asylum seeker living in sanctuary in a local church. she cannot join us out here without risking arrest and deportation.
“justice for the children who are the future of humanity,” “justice for those who cross borders as a last resort,” he translates maria’s words.
you can donate to the @CIBFund, a group that bonds out immigrants in the charlottesville area, here:

“my parents deserve better,” says the next speaker. she says she doesn’t deserve to wake up in a world where she has to tell her family every day, “be careful,” because the world they live in is dangerous for them. she leads the crowd in a chant of “no human being is illegal.”
a final speaker thanks everyone for coming, for this show of love and compassion. “we are human beings,” she says. “we are here together.”
