1. I've posted this #Brexit cartoon countless times since 2016 and it still rings true today. But lately I've been thinking more about what that ball and chain looks like...
2. Just about everyone serious now recognises that no deal cannot stay no deal so there will need to be subsequent talks after crashing out - and the price of reopening talks will be something akin with the WA - including a backstop agreement.
3. We know this because Brussels diplomats have said as much and with the UK then having zero leverage,why would they not? That's exactly what I'd do in their position. But I think it gets worse than that...

It takes a lot to see an "olive branch" in the pledge to use future relationship to do away with backstop /2

- so if UK either accepts NI-only backstop,

- or if all UK remained aligned in a way that makes border

So.. back to the backstop: Clearly the official EU line is “We’re not budging. The #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement was signed off by Theresa May and cabinet. End of story.” And there is 100% EU sincerity they would love not to have to discuss the thorny issue ever again. But.. /1
Realpolitik means EU leaders know a new UK PM will mean new #Brexit arguments - and crucially - since the EU hopes fervently to avoid no deal - it means new mathematics in Parliament. EU will watch closely to see if new PM could carry a majority for a #Brexit deal /2
To be clear: I am NOT saying here that EU will abandon the backstop if faced with strong new UK PM. EU wants to protect its single market, protect GFA and protect member state Ireland over departing member UK BUT /3

The basic problem with the Brexit Party is that though leavers may not be thick, their representatives very much are. They have a two dimensional concept of trade and international relations and that is why they are pushing for such a reckless gamble of a #Brexit.
They think trade is just a matter of sorting out tariffs. Explain to them that it involves everything from data adequacy agreements through to maritime surveillance and intellectual property (to name just three of three hundred), you'll be met with a blank stare.
The base assumption is that businesses trade with each other without the intervention of government - but it is through harmonisation that we have erased many of the impediments to trade and created vast new markets on anything from carbon trading to data services.
