1. A thread for ENTREPRENEURS. One & half years ago I had an interaction with the then Minister of Tourism Walter Mzembi on FB. I was asking him why they loved to send pple to Europe to lure tourists at booths & stands yet neglected the power of technology to market Zim & Africa.
2. I felt the cost did not really justify the benefit. If the cost of sending 2 people to France to set up a booth and meet 200 people is $40 000 and you do that 10x a yr that is $400K for very little visibility. My suggestion was team up with Rwanda, South Africa or Kenya
3. Build a startup that you co-fund & create a Platform that can be trusted for bookings and payment processing. Build it in a way that it becomes a complete Travel Search Engine for African Tourism. If you cut the trips in half, you have $600K to invest in that startup
4. The minister's response was it is expensive to build, I said it is not! I had experience of building similar platforms before. Eventually he blocked me. The coup came but I still felt this was an opportunity. So I decided to build it by myself - huyai.com
5. The vision is to eventually remove the 3rd party agencies who are taking more than 30-50% of revenue from the African operators by being the middlemen yet they have no tour business in Africa. This we will do by opening technology to even the smallest operator in Africa
6. Mr Morena in Kgalagadi should be able to get customers in USA pay for his tour directly to him not a certain guy on a couch in America who calls himself an agent & pockets a huge chunk just because of technology barriers. So join me in this by sharing huyai.com!
