American Carnage, p. 347. Mick Mulvaney in 2016 saying he can’t wait to show the world what a principled, non-partisan opponent of executive overreach he is once Trump is president because he’ll have the opportunity to put a GOP President in his place.
Mick and that whole Freedom Caucus crew (Amash excepted) have sure delivered on that promise, eh?

I’m having a hard time keeping up. Are modern progressives exactly like an inaccurate caricature of 17th century English Calvinists, or exactly like an inaccurate caricature of 18th century bloodthirsty French Jacobins?
Because, if you ask me I'd say modern Progressives are more like the the Girondin faction ca. 1792, and maybe also closer to Roger Williams's take on Calvinism ca. 1679. But mostly, I'd say they're more akin to a kind of Henry Wallace/popular front vision ca. 1945.
Ok, that last tweet was mostly just joshing in order to point out how incredibly predictable, hackneyed, inaccurate, and thin is the pool of historical referrents that our political punditocracy has to draw on.

A white civil rights activist was brutally murdered in Selma, AL in 1965. The leading white men of Selma immediately began raising money to defend those accused of the crime. The fate of "western civilization" hinged, they said, on the trial's outcome. npr.org/podcasts/51034…
In the eyes of the leading white men of Selma, the business owners & professionals & elected officials, defending "western civilization" meant defending white rule against the "outside agitators and pressure groups" who advocated for black voting rights and school integration.
The term "western civilization" has many connotations & is used in a wide range of ways; but we should always be mindful of the long history of American conservatives who have used that term to define racial and religious others as "outsiders" to "our" political tradition.

Finally got around to reading this piece and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's not just a bio of Hawley, it's a broad-ranging and clear-eyed assessment of the troublingly illiberal drift of American conservatism and the GOP more broadly. newrepublic.com/article/154526…
Hawley was a culture warrior from a young age. In the heat of the first PC-wars ca. 1994, at the age of 14, Hawley was already calling for a visionary leader to emerge who could speak some rude truths to a morally decadent nation, someone like Dan Quayle.
In many ways Hawley is a standard-issue Republican. Son of a banker, educated entirely in private schools (to the tune of about $500k the article estimates), Stanford undergrad who wrote for the conservative rag founded by Peter Thiel, then on to Yale law Federalist society...
