I’m having a hard time keeping up. Are modern progressives exactly like an inaccurate caricature of 17th century English Calvinists, or exactly like an inaccurate caricature of 18th century bloodthirsty French Jacobins?
Because, if you ask me I'd say modern Progressives are more like the the Girondin faction ca. 1792, and maybe also closer to Roger Williams's take on Calvinism ca. 1679. But mostly, I'd say they're more akin to a kind of Henry Wallace/popular front vision ca. 1945.
Ok, that last tweet was mostly just joshing in order to point out how incredibly predictable, hackneyed, inaccurate, and thin is the pool of historical referrents that our political punditocracy has to draw on.
Modern day conservatives want the state to determine what women can do with their wombs, want the state to tell you who you're allowed to love and marry, and have strict ideas about how gender identity should be expressed. But progressives are the tyrannical scolds. Got it.
