Obviously the UK will only get the trade deal it needs and wants with the US if it raises the possibility of working with China on trade and technology
And China knows the status of the UK is one of the critical questions defining the future global order. An open question too
It would be a discussion I would enjoy having with the US. “No, we cannot close the doors to China. You understand our trade relation with EU is in turmoil right now. At another time certainly. We can perhaps move a bit if US opens its financial servives market”
From the point of view of China: I said in a lecture in Wuhan two weeks ago that two scenarios were equally plausible. Either UK uses Brexit to allign closer to US or it sees it as a drive to develop new markets, China first of all
That is how China sees it too. A fork on the road. Political investment in the UK will be massive, but officials in Beijing are still studying how it should be done
