Since everyone wants to talk winners and losers like it’s a game, here are the losers from today: all of us. Mueller’s testimony further revealed that Republicans have lost every shred of decency and the reaction to it in the media showed us we’re lost in illusions.

We all lost.
The media right now is just drowning in ageist and ableist shaming, treating a national crisis like it’s a series finale, critiquing its entertainment value. They’re letting a criminal president lie without challenging him.

We are losing.
They built up Robert Mueller like he was going to be a rockstar savior. He sat down and was a reasonable, impartial witness. So now they’re destroying him for the sin of being serious and serving a long, decorated career. It’s repugnant.
Government and politics aren’t supposed to be a fireworks finale. Trump turned the volume up to 11 and now serious, sober people just bore the audience and programming directors. Honestly, this is a horror show.
Mueller laid out a damning case for impeachment. We learned there are ongoing investigations involving Manafort, WikiLeaks, and Russian blackmail. Today was a major event. But it wasn’t showtime. It wasn’t glitzy. Robert Mueller wasn’t Donald Trump and so he’s being crushed.
There’s so much blame to be given out. The infotainment peddlers who emphasize optics over substance, spectacle over information. Republicans for betraying their oaths. Democrats for not embracing their responsibility to impeach.

So awful and so dispiriting.

Had a few people asking how capitalism coopts social movements and protests, so I thought we could talk about the failed revolution of the 1960’s/1970’s, how it was disarmed, digested, and then transformed into a sellable product. 1/
What we’ve come to know as the movements of the 60’s/70’s was a combination of the Civil Rights Movement, anti-war movements, and social movements. To a large extent their ability to change was predicated on different groups recognizing power through solidarity. 2/
That solidarity was an engine for change until corporations saw an opportunity. The cultural consensus had nearly exhausted mass consumption and the destruction of consensus meant there was a chance to market diverse products. 3/

If you listen to 2nd Amendment thumpers they’re all hinting at New World Order conspiracy theories, a quiet nod toward the need for citizens to fight a totalitarian force. In this they’re signaling to religious extremists while not endangering their mainstream credibility.
It’s just another instance of the cult at the heart of the GOP, a white identity Christianity fueled by paranoia that minorities and white traitors are aligned with Satan to bring down God’s chosen people.
I’ve taken to calling them the Cult of the Shining City as their dogma is a mixture of white supremacy and Reagan’s occult-riddled vision of America as the product of generations of secret society planning by white philosophers.

Working on a book that explains how we came to this moment of dysfunction, chaos, and suffering. Some of the causes are becoming increasingly clear, and, for the first time, I'm starting to have some hope as to how we can change things and get moving in the right direction. 1/
It should come to no surprise that the main problem is the myth of America that has taken hold, the narratives that perpetuate which hide what's actually happening in place of simpler explanations and actual progress. We're stuck, way stuck, in a knot of myths and narratives. 2/
These narratives are, no surprise, based so much in the perpetuation of white supremacy and the controlling of populations by means of pitting them against one another while avoiding actual populism and progress. They've been sold for generations. 3/

@SenSasse When he was promoting his book a few months ago, he was interviewed regularly. The book "Them: .Why We Hate Each Other & How to Heal" and Sasse was uncritically described as a sane and moral, moderating force calling up to kinder, gentler time.
Then we’re riven by the President’s hate-filled attacks on young women of color in Congress & the mob like chant by supporters of his party and he’s not the go-to guy. No one asked Sasse “is the President racist? What is his role in spreading hate? How can we find a way to heal?”

1/4 I watched most of #Mueller’s testimony & something has been bugging me ...

@MSNBC @CNN and vocal critics of Trump are determined that the President either committed a crime (or an impermissible counterintelligence lapse) by being willing to accept Russian contacts & info.
2/4 Okay.

But isn’t it also true that it was the #Clinton campaign, with the help of #Obama, that SOUGHT AND PSID FOR Russian info through a variety of Russian contacts? Shouldn’t this also be of concern?

One word: dezinformatsiya - what if the Steele memo was the product of
3/4 a disinformation campaign to sow dischord and undermine Americans’ confidence in our system? Isn’t that REALLY the prize — and what has been achieved?

Isn’t it at least worth investigating whether both are possible — probable, even? What intel service doesn’t hedge its bets?
